Representatives from the Legalise Poker in Northern Ireland campaign today get a chance to put their case to the Department of Social Development committee which is reviewing gambling law.

The group has been collecting signatures on a petition to present to the committee and said on its Facebook page yesterday, “Signatures printed: 873 was the total when I hit the print button. Well done folks but don’t stop now. Keep it going!

“Some great comments too which have also been printed and will be presented tomorrow. We met last night to finalise our presentation to the committee, which will be done primarily by Glen McCabe, although there will be four of us attending (Desi Graham, Alan Gilmore and Paul Feldstein). As we all have been known to say: ONE TIME!”

Northern Ireland is the only part of the UK and Ireland where it is not legal to play the game in a live environment for money.

UPDATE 14:28 GMT, January 19: According to the BBC the committee has agreed to write to the department of social development to ask whether it is considering changing the gambling legislation after a Sinn Fein member said he could clearly see poker was a game of skill and a DUP member said he was from a generation where “big lads used to play cards on the street.”
