On Monday, Canterbury Park poker dealer Kirby Burnett defeated his two opponents to win on an episode of the popular game show Jeopardy, taking home $27,600. On Tuesday, he did it again, this time banking $30,200. On Wednesday, he went for the trifecta, but ultimately fell just short, bringing his three-day total to $59,800.
Burnett, who has been dealing poker in the Minnesota card room since 2000, is also a champion chess player. Burnett used aggressive betting during his Daily Doubles and Final Jeopardy questions to make his three-day run.
In his first match, he found himself in last place entering the final question, which was, “This volunteer group was born in May, 1898 near the bar at the Menger Hotel in San Antonio, Texas and lasted for only 133 days.” After risking $12,000 of his $15,600, Burnett discovered that he was the only player to correctly answer, “Who are the rough riders,” giving him the win.
His second match wasn’t much of a sweat. After running through an entire category, Burnett found himself up $3,000 and used it to his advantage after betting big on all three Daily Doubles, giving him nearly a 4-1 lead over his opponents entering the final question. Though he couldn’t lose, he was still the only player to answer the Final Jeopardy question correctly. “The Carabelli and Durazzo families are considered the Hatfields and the McCoys of this island.” Both of his opponents guessed “Sicily,” but Burnett knew it was “Corsica.”
On his third and final appearance, Burnett found himself in last place and risked it all on the final question, which was, “In 2002, his no. 10 jersey from the 1970 World Cup Finals sold at auction for a record $220,850.” Burnett correctly answered “Pele,” but so did his opponent, meaning he lost the match by only $400. Still, he was given a $2,000 consolation prize for finishing in second place, bringing his three-day total to $59,800.
