Last week, it was reported that Las Vegas Sands CEO Sheldon Adelson was ready to give Newt Gingrich an additional $10 million to support the Winning Our Future super PAC, which has been largely credited with helping the former house speaker win the South Carolina primary.
Now in an interview with Forbes, Adelson is saying that he’d be willing to give as much as $100 million to help put the Republican into office. Because of the casino mogul’s monetary influence, he has been the target of criticism from those who feel he is trying to buy an election.
“They like to trash other people,” said Adelson. “It’s unfair that I’ve been treated unfair, but it doesn’t stop me. I might give $10 million or $100 million to Gingrich.”
Adelson has a net worth of roughly $25 billion and agreed that although it may be unfair for him to use his money to support his choice of candidate, he would continue to do so as long as it was legally allowed.
“I’m against very wealthy people attempting to or influencing elections,” he said. “But as long as it’s doable I’m going to do it. I have my own philosophy and I’m not ashamed of it. I gave the money because there is no other legal way to do it. I don’t want go through ten different corporations to hide my name. I’m proud of what I do and I’m not looking to escape recognition.”
Gingrich has not yet publicly taken any position on online poker, but has expressed some concern over casino expansion and its effect on the poor.
