On Thursday, Jacksonville Greyhound Racing and Poker will officially become BestBet Jacksonville. The North Florida facility will open with 70 poker tables, making it the largest in the state, and will also feature a simulcast area for greyhound races, horse races and jai alai wagering.
The room’s first tournament series will be the Jacksonville Spring Series in late April, which will feature 14 events. The series will conclude with the WPT Jacksonville BestBet Open main event, which boasts a $1 million guarantee and will be televised.
The new room has created about 260 jobs with an average salary of $50,000, but the BestBet staff is also flaunting the ancillary benefits of the parimutuel facility, which will help the local economy as well.
“With the customers we bring in, they will be putting money into the restaurants, the hotels, the dry cleaners, to name a few,” said Executive Director of Poker Operations Deborah Giardina. “We will have a very positive impact on this area.”
On Tuesday, the poker room’s employees participated in a test run, going through proper procedures and even taking turns as casino patrons to allow the rest of their staff to practice.
This is the third BestBet property in the Jacksonville area. The company also operates St. Johns Greyhound Park and the Orange Park Kennel Club. The Palm Beach Kennel Club, which was the previous largest poker room in the state, boasts 60 tables.
