Jim MurrenMGM Resorts International Chairman and CEO Jim Murren took the podium for his keynote speech at the 19th Southern Gaming Summit in Biloxi, Mississippi last week and proudly proclaimed that “Internet gaming is here.”

Only, according to Murren, it’s not here in the form of federal legislation and in his opinion, it won’t be here at the federal level for quite some time.

“It won’t be here likely at a federal level because the federal government is doing what they are best at… nothing at all,” said Murren. "It will be done at a state-by-state level and [MGM Resorts] will be actively engaged.

Although Murren and his company prefer a federal solution over a patchwork of state regulations, he is convinced that it is unlikely to occur thanks to a hold up in the House.

“If it isn’t happening, don’t blame Sen. Reid. Blame the House Republicans. That’s where it is being held up.”

Murren also announced that a cashless social media gaming site would launch as early as next month in preparation for real-money poker. The site will be largely incorporated into the existing framework of MGM properties and will have a tool to drive players to their 15 various resorts in Nevada, Mississippi and Michigan.
