On Monday, an indictment was unsealed in Oklahoma alleging that a handful of individuals engaged in a multimillion-dollar gambling operation that included running underground poker games with a rake.

One of the persons is Teddy Mitchell, husband to Julie Mitchell, who was found beaten to death in the couple’s Oklahoma City home about two years ago.

The murder case is still unsolved, and no one has been charged in that crime. According to a local TV station, authorities became aware of the gambling operation after the homicide.

Mitchell’s sons, Billy and Dryden, are also charged with gambling offenses.

An attorney for one of the sons told the Associated Press: “The murder case couldn’t get solved, so they started coming after them for this stuff.”

According to a press release from the local FBI office, defendants are also accused of running a sports-betting business with help from an offshore, third-party gambling site. The accused allegedly laundered more than $8.1 million in proceeds from the illegal gambling activities.

The poker-related charges state that they worked as dealers, “bankers” and “greeters” for the games that varied in stakes. According to the FBI, the group dealt hundreds of hands per week.

The feds want to take $8.1 million from the defendants, as well as “real property” and vehicles.

If convicted, some of the individuals could be sentenced for up to 20 years in prison, while others face up to five, in addition to potential criminal fines. Altogether, nine people, as well as the Costa Rican corporation, face 81 counts of criminal activity.

According to NewsOK, Mitchell was released Tuesday to home detention on $500,000 bond.
