Two Las Vegas tourists, both law students at the University of California Berkeley campus, have been arrested and accused of decapitating an exotic 14-year-old bird at the Flamingo Hotel and Casino’s wildlife habitat on the Strip.
Eric Cuellar and Justin Teixeira, both 24, were charged on Friday after surveillance footage showed them cornering a helmeted guinea fowl near some trees and then emerging with the bird’s headless body. No details have emerged from police concerning the students’ mental state at the time, but police suspect that the use of narcotics was involved.
According to witnesses, the two men then laughed to onlookers about the killing before tossing the bird’s body aside.
Both men were arrested and booked into the Clark County Detention Center and are charged with felony counts of conspiracy and the willful and malicious torture or killing of wildlife.
The Flamingo’s wildlife habitat is home to a flock of Chilean Flamingos, as well as turtles, ducks, koi and swans.
