Feds Think Mashpee Wampanoags Giving Too Much Away In Massachusetts Casino Deal

Government Says No To Tribe's 21.5-Percent Gaming Revenue Tax

The Mashpee Wampanoags, a tribal group in the state of Massachusetts, recently had its deal with the state rejected by the federal government. The tribe is looking to build a massive brick-and-mortar casino in the city of Taunton — part of a state-level effort to expand gambling and help prevent residents who gamble from traveling elsewhere to play.

According to the Associated Press, a federal agency thinks that the agreed-upon tax rate of 21.5 percent is too high — and would conflict with the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act — and that the deal is too broad. The tax rate would have been the highest ever of its kind.

The tribe and the state will resume negotiations and try to send back another proposal.

On Monday, the governor called the rejection “very frustrating” .
