Tribal casinos across the state of California generate $7.8 billion in economic output a year, according to findings announced Monday from the California Nations Indian Gaming Association.

The study, produced by Beacon Economics, found that in 2014 gaming accounted for $4 billion, while $3.8 billion came from secondary spending by vendors that supply casinos. The tribal gaming industry also supported more than 63,000 jobs, the study found.

“The economic and labor impacts are felt in the local communities that surround tribal
government gaming facilities," said Steve Stallings, Chairman of CNIGA. "Across the state, 90 percent of those employed by tribal governments are non-tribal employees. Most of these facilities are in very remote and economically depressed areas and the casinos are some of the biggest employers in their regions.”

There are about 60 tribal casinos in the state, and nearly 100 brick-and-mortar facilities altogether that offer poker. For about a decade, California has considered legalizing online poker sites, but the tribal gaming industry there can’t come to a consensus on how the games should be regulated.

In July, the National Indian Gaming Commission said that tribal casinos across America won $29.9 billion from gamblers in FY2015, which was a new record. The California region is the largest of its kind in the nation.
