The NY Post has reported that Major League Baseball’s New York Mets are interested in opening a Las Vegas-style casino adjacent to Citi Field in an effort to recoup losses stemming from a Ponzi scheme which saw the team’s owners lose millions.

Mets owners Fred Wilpon and Saul Katz were fleeced for $162 million by Bernie Madoff, founder of an investment securities firm responsible for stealing $65 billion, the largest financial fraud committed in U.S. history.

Now, their company Sterling Equities has submitted a proposal to build a 500-room hotel and casino on 62-acres of land next to the stadium. The company has also brought the Shinnecock Indian Nation on board, who is willing to operate the casino.

“[The hotel and casino] will attract millions of visitors from the New York area and around the world and will serve as New York’s newest and most unique entertainment destination,” said the proposal.

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo has publicly stated that he’d only support three upstate casinos and believes that upstate counties are in more need of financial stability.
