New Jersey To Continue Fight For Sports BettingSaga To Help Struggling Atlantic City Rages On |

New Jersey, home to struggling Atlantic City, wants to not only bring online gambling to the table, but also sports betting. Currently, wagering on athletic events is not permitted in the Garden State — thanks to a 1992 federal ban.
The state legalized sports betting in 2012, but was then sued by the major sports leagues. On Thursday, a federal judge decided to strike down the Garden State law, according to Reuters.
The state will reportedly continue the battle and hope to join four other states that already have legalized sports betting, thanks to being grandfathered into the business.
“We are confident that the federal court of appeals will conclude that New Jersey should be treated equally with other states,” Christie reportedly said in a statement.
Christie legalized online gambling last week, but is not looking to offer sports betting on the web. The Interstate Wire Act prohibits that activity nationwide.
Part of the motivation lies in the fact that New Jersey recently fell behind Pennsylvania in terms of casino revenue. Other states in the region are also beefing up their respective casino industries, in addition to exploring online betting
