Major online gaming states saw significant boosts in revenue in September as gamblers continue heading to their computers and mobile phones for some action.
That included increases in sports betting as football season got underway. Online poker, however, remained stagnant again. In New Jersey, the state continues to see drops in live casino revenue. Here’s a look at the numbers in each state.
Pennsylvania
The Keystone State saw September revenue of $505.9 million from all forms of gaming, rising 6.2% compared to September 2023, according to the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board. Online gaming revenue totaled $176.7 million, up 10.8% from $159.5 million in September 2023. Here’s a look at revenue in each major online category:
● Slots – $132 million
● Table games – $42.4 million
● Poker – $2.2 million
Poker was down slightly from the $2.3 million in August. For sports betting, the state produced a total handle of $811.3 million in September, 11.71% above $726.3 million last September. The taxable revenue figure was $53.5 million, 46.1% higher than September 2023.
New Jersey
After state officials expressed concern in recent months about falling live casino revenue, the New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement reported revenue of $230.6 million in September for the state’s nine casinos. That’s a decrease of 6.5% compared to $246.5 million for September 2023. Year-to-date revenue reached $2.15 billion, a drop of 0.9% from last year.
The picture was different for online gaming, which produced $208.1 million. That’s up 27.1% from $163.8 million last September as iGaming revenue inches closer to live gaming totals. Year to date, online gaming revenue is at $1.73 billion, a surge of 23.2% compared to $1.41 billion for the same period in 2023.
Online poker produced $2.2 million, a drop of 6.9% from $2.4 million during the same month in 2023. Sports wagering revenue was $119.6 million in September, a 7.6% increase from $111.1 million in 2023. The year-to-date total stands at $835.4 million, a 17.8% jump from $709 million last year.
Revenue from all forms of gaming equaled $558.3 million, rising 7.1% from $521.5 million from September 2023. Online gaming played a major role and year-to-date gaming revenue totaled $4.72 billion, a jump of 10.1% from $4.29 billion in 2023.
Michigan
Operators reported $261 million in online gaming and sports betting revenue in September, rising 16.5% from August, according to the Michigan Gaming Control Board. Online casino gaming accounted for $202.6 million with sports betting bringing in $58.4 million, up from $196.66 million and $27.36 million in August.
Total iGaming and online sports betting adjusted gross receipts (AGR) for September were $209.9 million, including $182.3 million from iGaming and $27.6 million from sports betting. This was an iGaming increase of 3.1% and 68.7% for sports betting compared to August. Sports numbers were up 47.2% compared to September 2023 with iGaming AGR up 21.8% for the same month.
Total September online sports betting handle reached $501.8 million, moving up 79.2% from the $280.1 million in August. Online poker is lumped together with online casino gaming in Michigan, but it seems likely that numbers fall in line with Pennsylvania and New Jersey.
