The World Poker Tour North American Poker Championship began today at Niagara Fallsview Casino Resort, and it attracted a nice selection of popular pros.

So many players registered for the event (about 570) that the first day had to be split up into two days. The first of about 260 players kicked off the event at around 12:30 p.m. EST.

The final table is scheduled to take place Sunday, Oct. 29.

Even though the tournament has really just begun, there have been some notable busts, including Michael Gracz, Kathy Liebert, Joe Sebok, and Pete Giordano. CardPlayer.com is offering live updates of the event. They can be found here.

The WPT is hoping that the NAPC will become a place for players who hail from Canada - such as Daniel Negreanu and Gavin Smith - and those from America to show which country produces the better poker players.

"By staging the North American Poker Championship in this beautiful Canadian casino, we put out the welcome mat for all poker enthusiasts in Canada and truly lay down the gauntlet to see who can reign supreme on the continent," said Steve Lipscomb, CEO and founder of WPT Enterprises. "We are thrilled to welcome the Niagara Fallsview to the WPT family and look forward to an inspiring and exciting event that will attract players from both sides of the border."

Some of the notable players competing today are John D'Agostino, John Juanda, Alan Goehring, Jim McManus, Carlos Mortensen, Barry Greenstein, Dan Harrington, and Humberto Brenes.
