The Toronto Star reported Wednesday that the numbers are looking really bad for approval of a casino to be built in downtown Toronto.

In order for the casino to be authorized, 23 city councillors must vote in favor of the plan. There are 45 members on the council. The vote is quickly approaching, and 21 councillors reportedly have declared that they will definitely vote against it.

Only seven councillors are reportedly in clear support of a downtown Toronto casino. The mayor is behind the idea as well, and he’s trying to drum up support.

One of the key issues with the proposed casino was the amount of money the city of Toronto would get per year. The usual issues of problem gambling were also raised by opponents.

Toronto is home to some 2.6 million people and has a strong tourism industry as well.

MGM Resorts International is one of the firms pushing hard for authorization to build downtown. It has launched an aggressive social media campaign as well. Las Vegas Sands Corp. and Wynn Resorts Ltd. are also reportedly interested in a casino there.

A vote on the controversial idea reportedly could happen in May, and if the decision is negative for gaming interests, other spots in Ontario could be targeted for construction.
