The Associated Press broke the news Tuesday morning that federal authorities in the state of New York have claimed that members of a Russian organized crime ring ran high-stakes underground poker games in New York City that were frequented by professional athletes, movie stars and apparently executives in the Wall Street trading world.
The issue reportedly stems from the fact that these games allegedly were part of a money-laundering operation and other shady activity that spilled offshore as well. Several individuals reportedly were arrested in a handful of U.S cities.
Internet gambling was reportedly also part of the investigation.
The New York Times reported that a prestigious art gallery on the Upper East Side was raided Tuesday by federal authorities. A couple of individuals involved with the gallery were named.
Few details have been released, but the government reportedly will unveil its indictment later today. The Associated Press reported that authorities wouldn’t name the poker players involved in the aforementioned games. Underground celebrity poker games have been in the news before, but not related to this case. Such private games in New York City are technically illegal.
