Sung’s previous bracelet came in 2009, when he topped a 6,012-player field in a $1,000 no-limit hold’em event to win $771,338.
This time around Sung had to outlast a significantly smaller but tougher field, outlasting the likes of Richard Lyndaker (6th – $178,261), Stephen Chidwick (4th – $353,780) and Dani Stern (3rd – $509,473) en route to a heads-up battle with fellow bracelet winner Phil Galfond. The 28-year-old Galfond is a highly respected high-stakes cash game player who is one of the biggest winners in the history of online cash games with more than $9 million in profit according to tracking sites.
Sung entered the final table of six in fourth chip position, but he began heads-up play with 7,460,000 to Galfond’s 5,670,000. The two battled for a total of 50 hands, with Sung able to build his lead until the final hand arose. Sung min-raised from the button to 240,000 and Galfond moved all-in for 2,240,000. Sung called with the J10 and Galfond turned over his KQ.
The flop of KJ10 hit both players, giving Sung two pair and Galfond top pair and an open-ended straight draw. The turn brought the 6, keeping Sung ahead. The 5 sealed the deal, sending Galfond to the rail in second place for $744,841.
