Tilman Fertitta will build an iconic Golden Nugget Hotel and Casino in Lake Charles, according to KHOU 11 News reporting from this week. The property will cost an estimated $600 million.

The casino reportedly would be extremely lucrative because of its close proximity to the state of Texas, which has very limited gambling. Residents from that state often travel to Louisiana to get their gambling fix, spending about $2.5 billion a year on the pastime.

Fertitta’s new casino would be the fifth Golden Nugget Hotel and Casino within the United States. There are Golden Nuggets in Nevada and New Jersey, just to name a couple.

“It’s going to be a huge property. You’re going to have a marina. You’re going to have all of our restaurants,” Fertitta told KHOU 11 News. “It’s going to be a great gaming floor. You’re going to think you’re in Vegas.”

The casino reportedly will be next door to the L’Auberge casino owned by Pinnacle Entertainment (about two hours from Houston). Fertitta reportedly would love to build a Las Vegas-style casino in Texas, but the laws currently on the books wouldn’t let him.

Louisiana has 18 commercial casinos which generate annual revenue of about $2.4 billion.
