Gambling Business: Pennsylvania Grants New 3-Year License To Mohegan Sun At Pocono Downs

In Seven Years, Property Has Generated $840M In Tax Revenue

The operator of Mohegan Sun at Pocono Downs in Pennsylvania has received regulatory approval to continue with business for another three years.

Last week, the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board unanimously voted to renew the Category 1 casino operator’s license of Downs Racing, LP, a subsidiary of the Mohegan Tribal Gaming Authority.

The state’s regulatory board consists of seven members.

According to a state report, since opening in November 2006, Mohegan Sun at Pocono Downs has generated $840 million in tax revenue through slot machine and table games play, and the facility also currently employs more than 1,700 people.

In July 2010, Mohegan Sun at Pocono Downs made state history by being one of the first casinos in Pennsylvania to add live table games such as blackjack, roulette and craps.

According to the facility’s official website, it has 2,300 slots and more than 80 table games, which includes an 18-table poker room.

The Mohegan Tribe of Indians of Connecticut is a federally recognized Indian tribe with about a 507-acre reservation situated in southeastern Connecticut, adjacent to Uncasville, Connecticut.

Pennsylvania is the second-most lucrative gambling market in the country, taking in more than $3 billion annually. Nevada is tops with more than $10 billion annually in gaming revenue.

According to the American Gaming Association, Pennsylvania has 11 operating commercial casinos. It legalized such properties in 2004.
