One of Rhode Island’s two casinos is set to see a significant increase in the number of table games it offers customers.
According to the Providence Journal, Twin River Casino just recently won state lottery approval to increase the number of live table games from 66 to 80. The gambling facility was once a greyhound racetrack with electronic slots, but now is a full-fledged casino.
Permission was granted to the property on Friday.
According to the American Gaming Association, the state’s gambling industry brought in around $528 million in 2012. It is taxed by a rate of 27.58 percent.
The move by the state to allow more table games comes as other states in the region bolster their respective gambling industries. There has been a massive gambling expansion initiative in Massachusetts. New York is looking at three more casinos. Pennsylvania is on the verge of a huge casino-resort in Philadelphia. New Jersey and Delaware are eyeing online gambling. New Hampshire is trying to pass an expansion as well.
Rhode Island’s director of revenue told the Providence Journal that it was a “defensive measure against competition.”
The move was also in response to an increase in demand for such live-action games.
A Twin River spokesperson reportedly said, “Twin River chairman John E. Taylor, Jr. has said in the past that the market would largely dictate any expansion plans and that was certainly the case here. Twin River is planning to announce later this week the plan and timetable for bringing on line the additional games.”
