A casino-hotel project has new life in Vancouver, British Columbia after it was first proposed in 2010 and later rejected by the city in 2011, the Las Vegas Review-Journal reported Tuesday.
In order to appease city officials, the proposal had to be scaled back. There will be fewer slot machines, table games and hotel rooms than were originally proposed.
The casino component to the project will be a replacement for the existing Edgewater Casino in Vancouver. The facility will reportedly be closed and moved to its new home.
“We listened to the community and understood their concerns,” the developer said in a Tuesday press conference. “We believe that we have brought in the right partners and have designed an urban resort consistent with the desires of the city.”
The development is expected to be done before 2017.
In order to capitalize on existing business activity, the project will be attached to BC Palace, a sports stadium. That structure sees games from the Canadian Football League’s British Columbia Lions and Major League Soccer’s Vancouver Whitecaps. A hockey arena is also nearby.
The firms behind the project are Las Vegas-based Paragon Gaming Inc., Canadian investment firm Dundee Corp. and Canadian real estate developer 360 Vox Corp. Marriott International will probably manage the hotel, pending the finalization of a deal.
Despite the scaling back of the project, which will come at a price tag of $535 million, it will still be the largest of its kind in Canada, according to the Las Vegas Review-Journal.
The plan still needs to be approved, but all signs point to that being likely this time.
