Image via the Associated PressA high-ranking U.S. military official is currently being looked at by the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation for possibly using counterfeit poker chips.

According to the New York Times, Vice Adm. Timothy Giardina, who is second in command at the United States Strategic Command, was gambling at Horseshoe Casino in Council Bluffs when the alleged misconduct took place. Iowa officials were first tipped off in June.

The U.S. Strategic Command oversees the country’s nuclear weapons, among other duties.

Giardina has been suspended by the government pending the conclusion of the investigation.

To date, no charges have been filed.

It is unclear what stakes Giardina, who has spent more than three decades in the Navy, was playing or how much the alleged counterfeit chips were worth.

Located at Offutt Air Force Base near Omaha, Nebraska, U.S. Strategic Command is one of nine unified commands in the Department of Defense. According to its website:

USSTRATCOM conducts global operations in coordination with other Combatant Commands, Services, and appropriate U.S. Government agencies to deter and detect strategic attacks against the U.S. and its allies, and is prepared to defend the nation as directed.”
