A total of 659 entries where made in event no. 2 at the 2013 World Series of Poker Europe, building a €632,640 prize pool for the €1,100 no-limit hold’em re-entry tournament. After two days of play in the beautiful Casino Barrière d’Enghien-les-Bains the final table of nine was set. The final table action was fast and furious, a phrase oft overused in poker, but this time quite appropriate: it took only 91 hands to play from nine players down to a champion: 21-year-old Swede Henrik Johansson. For the win the young cash game specialist earned his first WSOP gold bracelet, the €129,700 ($175,018 USD) first-place prize and 840 Card Player Player of the Year points.
Plenty of players in tournament fields win their way in via satellites, but Johansson didn’t even have to use his poker skills to gain entry to this event. He essentially won his seat in a raffle on 888 Poker. He navigated his way through the field and made the final table as the chip leader.
It was mostly smooth sailing for Johansson, and converting his lead into a title win seemed almost assured when he won a gigantic pot three handed, getting his money in with pocket kings against the turned set of fours belonging to Yaniv Botbol. With one card coming Johansson had only two outs. The K hit the river, Botbol hit the rail and Johansson scooped the massive pot, giving him the momentum needed to defeat Adriano Torre-Grossa heads-up for the title, becoming the sixth Swedish gold bracelet winner in WSOP history.
Despite the exciting nature of that key hand, Johansson remained staid even when his supporters were jubilantly celebrating. “As a high stakes pro, it is pretty standard to two-out people on the river,” explained Johansson. “I’m pretty used to it.”
