Some Want Indy Airport To Host GamblingPlan Would Implement Wireless Games For Travelers |

Some in Indiana want the Indianapolis International Airport to offer gambling.
The idea behind the plan is to implement wireless gambling for passengers in order to subsidize more nonstop flights for the airport. Gambling lounges, for those of legal age to play, could be created to cater to those waiting for flights.
One of the men with the proposal has a gambling background, as he is a former general counsel for the Indiana Gaming Commission.
Despite thinking the idea was “clever”, Indianapolis Airport Authority President Mike Wells doesn’t think it will amount to anything. Lawmakers in the state have been very cautious with gambling expansion plans in recent years. Proposals have been rejected before.
Reportedly, gambling revenue at airports hasn’t turned out to be a big money maker, at least historically. Airports in both Las Vegas and Minneapolis/St. Paul have such games for travelers, but the revenue figures have been lackluster.
Slot machines at McCarran International Airport in Las Vegas reportedly bring in around $25 million annually, which is a small drop in the bucket for the state’s overall gaming revenue of around $10.8 billion annually.
The desire to increase gambling in Indiana also stems from increased casino competition in the region at large. Neighboring states have been bolstering their respective industries.
Public officials have thus been eager to find ways to maintain current casino tax revenue.
