Poker receives some serious attention across the country around this time of year.
The World Series of Poker crowned Michigan native Ryan Riess as its 2013 main event champion last week, and during the final table the 23-year-old sported a Detroit Lions jersey. The player was none other than superstar wide receiver Calvin Johnson.
Thanks to the national coverage of the event, Johnson became aware of the whole jersey thing.
The football pro was actually asked about the poker pro wearing his jersey and had this to say:
“Even though he could have been paid to wear some stuff that sponsors would have paid him to wear…that’s some love he is showing for the Lions right there. I love it.”
Riess beat out 6,352 players to earn $8,361,570 and his first career WSOP bracelet. Las Vegas nightclub promoter Jay Farber got second.
After Sunday, the Lions are now 6-3 and leading the NFC Northern Division.
