German high stakes poker pro Philipp Gruissem has topped a field of 28 entries to emerge victorious in the 2013 World Poker Tour Alpha8 St. Kitts $100,000 super high roller less than a month after winning the £100,000 WPT Alpha8 London. This was Gruissem’s third title of 2013, each coming in an event with a buy-in of $50,000 or higher.
For this most recent win Gruissem earned $1,086,400 and 600 Card Player Player of the Year points, which moved him into 9th place in the overall standings with 3,038 points and year-to-date earnings of $4,494,419. He has made seven final tables in total in 2013, each of which earned him a six-figure payday.
Gruissem defeated Tom McDonald heads-up for the title. On the final hand Gruissem moved all-in preflop and McDonald called with the A6. Gruissem held the A5, meaning that he needed to hit a five to scoop the entire pot. That is just what happened when the board ran out J54K10, securing the title for Gruissem and sending McDonald to the rail with $679,000 and 500 POY points.
Gruissem was not the only high-roller regular to make a move into the POY top ten as a result of this final table. Scott Seiver finished fifth for $217,280 and 250 POY points.
This was Seiver’s ninth final table finish of the year, bringing his point total to 3,052 and moving him into 8th place in the overall POY standings. Seiver won the PokerStars Caribbean Adventure super high roller for more than $2 million and finished runner-up to Gruissem in the WPT Alpha8 London last month.
Jason Koon finished fourth for $298,760 and 300 POY points. This was his sixth final table of 2013, moving him into 30th place in the rankings. He has garnered 2,268 POY points and earnings of $1,024,763 so far this year.
This was the final WPT Alpha8 event of 2013, with the next scheduled stop to be held at the Emperors Palace Hotel Casino in Johannesburg, South Africa in February, 2014.
