Police at the ongoing Australian Open tennis tournament have busted a man for allegedly using a sophisticated scheme to gamble on the matches with a huge edge over bookmakers.
The 22-year-old was arrested Tuesday while court-side during a match. According to the Herald Sun, police claim that he was using a special electronic device sewn into his clothes to send messages to an partner who would place the bets with a legitimate bookmaker before a TV delay (between seven and 10 seconds) caught up and the betting odds were different. Such a process would obviously give a bettor much better odds to beat the house, though it’s unclear how much.
According to the report, the man is believed to be a part of a gambling syndicate. He has been charged with “one count of engaging in conduct that would corrupt a betting outcome.”
In other words, cheating at gambling.
The state reportedly could throw a draconian 10-year prison sentence at him, if convicted.
Reports indicate that the arrest could be the first of its kind in the sports world. The alleged criminal activity that the man was engaged in is called “courtsiding”.
The suspect, who is from the United Kingdom, will appear in court Thursday.
The Australian open runs Jan. 13-26 in Melbourne.
