Las Vegas Sands owner Sheldon Adelson gave more than $100 million to Republicans during the last election cycle, has promised to “spend whatever it takes” against online poker, and now has given $16.4 million to help an Israel non-profit get to the moon.

The Israeli group is hoping to join the United States, Russia and China as the only countries with moon landings.

It is hoping to do so by 2015.

The project — dubbed SpaceIL — is competing with 17 other organizations in a contest from Google. According to Retuers, $20 million will go to the first team to land a spacecraft on the moon, make it jump 500 meters, while of course transmitting images and video back to earth.

“As an entrepreneur, nothing is as thrilling as supporting a group of people who have been told that their dreams cannot be realized,” Adelson reportedly said.

Adelson is one of the richest men in the world.
