The 2014 World Series of Poker kicked off with the traditional $5,000 casino employees event, which drew 876 players and created a total prize pool of $394,200. After three days of play, Roland Reparejo, a 55-year-old, semi-retired poker dealer originally from the Philippines.
Reparejo, who came to the U.S. when he was 19 before working for over three decades as a chef, has one prior cash on his tournament resume, finishing in 134th place in the 2013 senior’s event for $3,411.
“This is incredible to win,” Reparejo said. “I’ve been coming here for years, usually to play in the employee’s event and the seniors, too. I can’t believe I won this. It’s a dream to me.”
The event, which originated in 1983, was originally scheduled for two days, but play was halted late on the second day with two players remaining. It took just five minutes on the third day when play resumed for Reparejo to defeat eventual runner up Cory Emery.
