A total of 675 players turned out for the 2014 European Poker Tour London £4,250 no-limit hold’em main event, building a total prize pool of £2,619,000. From that sizable turnout German student Sebastian Pauli emerged victorious, capturing his first EPT main event title and £499,700 ($802,971).

To earn the win the 25-year-old Management and Economics student at Ruhr University had to overcome a very tough final table that featured two former EPT champions in Kevin MacPhee and Jake Cody.

Pauli came into the final day as the chip leader with more than a quarter of the chips in play. He was able to ride that chip lead to heads-up with just under a 2-to-1 chip advantage over Kevin MacPhee, who won the EPT Berlin main event in 2010 and was looking to join Vicki Coren as a multiple EPT main event winner. MacPhee fought his way off of the ropes after getting down early but ran into some big hands from Pauli and again found himself behind when the final hand arose.

MacPhee picked up the ADiamond Suit10Club Suit and raised to 320,000. Pauli looked at the AClub SuitQSpade Suit and three-bet to 860,000. After several minutes of thought MacPhee elected to reraise all in. Pauli snap called and was well ahead going into the flop of KDiamond Suit6Diamond Suit6Spade Suit. The 4Diamond Suit on the turn meant Pauli also had to avoid diamonds heading into the river. The 8Club Suit improved neither player, securing the pot and the title for Pauli and sending MacPhee to the rail as the runner up with £308,500.

In addition to the title and the money Pauli also earned 1,680 Card Player Player of the Year points. This was his third final table and second title of the year, having won a prelim at the EPT Barcelona festival earlier this year. As a result of his consistency this year he has climbed into 22nd place in the overall standings.
