Poker pro Phil Ivey received preliminary approval this week to operate a medical marijuana dispensary in Las Vegas, according to the Las Vegas Review-Journal.
Ivey was one of 26 who were approved by city officials.
According to the report, city-qualified applicants still need to get the go-ahead from the state health department. After the state OK, Las Vegas officials will have a final suitability hearing.
Ivey, a 10-time WSOP bracelet winner, is one of poker’s all-time most profitable players.
This year, Ivey has had a couple of setbacks in the form of lawsuits from casino firms. Ivey recently lost a court battle in London after a casino there refused to pay him more than $12 million. The casino said Ivey cheated, and a judge agreed. In April, Ivey was sued by Atlantic City’s Borgata over $9.6 million that the casino said he won by cheating.
Ivey’s legal team maintains that his method, called “edge-sorting,” is “sheer skill.”
This week, it was announced that Ivey’s online poker venture is shutting down for the remainder of this year. Ivey Poker claims it will relaunch in 2015 after product enhancements.
The 38-year-old captured his 10th bracelet this summer and an untold sum in side bets after he sought action on him winning this summer. Over on the Full Tilt, Ivey has dropped more than $2.4 million this year, according to data from HighstakesDB.
