Las Vegas’ airport is on pace to have more than 40 million passengers fly into it this year, according to a report from the Las Vegas Review-Journal. McCarran International Airport just recently surpassed 32 million and 40 million would be a record if it’s reached.

The 32.4 million passengers so far this year is a 2.4-percent gain, year-over-year.

September’s figure was also the 10th straight month traffic has increased at McCarran.

The increase in passengers to the airport hasn’t been reflected in gaming win for the Silver State, however. For the first nine months of 2014, gaming win is down about one percent compared to the same period last year. Gaming win in 2013 was $11.14 billion.

That was a 2.6-percent increase over 2012.

McCarran International Airport has kept its name despite efforts two years ago to alter it, thanks to the man who it was named after being a outspoken racist, as Nevada Sen. Harry Reid pointed out.

The airport is named after former Sen. Pat McCarran, who represented Nevada from 1932 until his death in 1954. He remains highly controversial to this day.

“Pat McCarran was one of the most anti-Semitic…one of the most anti-black, one of the most prejudiced people who has ever served in the Senate,” Reid said. “It’s not a decision I’m going to make, but if you ask me to give my opinion, I don’t think his name should be on anything.”
