Indiana Lawmakers Want Land-Based CasinosGaming Study Committee Recommends Law Change |

Indiana’s gaming study committee unanimously agreed Thursday that the state’s 10 riverboat casinos should be allowed to move onto land, according to a report from nwitimes.com.
If it became law, the riverboat gambling facilities would be able to move existing operations to land right next to their respective docks. The plan is to make the casinos more competitive with casinos in neighboring states.
Another part of the plan calls for tax breaks to help spur development in the land-based casinos.
“We have a situation where the casinos are struggling and we can either sit back and do nothing and watch them continue to decline, or try to help them, just like we would any other industry, become more competitive,” state Rep. Tom Dermody, R-LaPorte, the committee chairman, said.
The plan will be discussed by lawmakers during next year’s legislative session.
Indiana’s casino industry is worth more than $2.5 billion annually, according to data from the American Gaming Association, the industry’s top lobbying group on Capitol Hill.
