DraftKings guarantees the $2.2 million in payouts. The entries are capped at 92,400. This week the contest hosted 72,609 players. With the $27 entry fee, that leaves $1,960,443 as the amount that DraftKings’ users put forth towards the $2.2 million prize pool. If you’re putting the pieces of my nifty puzzle together, that means the overlay in this contest was $239,557. 15,500 people cashed in this field of 72,609, meaning over 21 percent of the contestants walked away as winners. Talk about value!
Let’s examine what “DrewTheChamp’s” winning lineup consisted of.
The first thing that jumps out is his Green Bay ‘stack’. Stack is a common term for pairing a quarterback with a wide receiver or using multiple teammates in one lineup (this term applies to any fantasy sport). Most daily fantasy sports players will choose to pair a quarterback with a single wide receiver or tight end. But due to Green Bay’s extremely prolific trio of Aaron Rodgers, Jordy Nelson, and Randall Cobb, it makes sense to use all three of them in some instances. This would probably be a losing move on a less explosive offense than Green Bay.
Jonas Gray. Who? It looks like nobody else knows much about him because he was only in .6 percent of the rosters in the field. Using these types of sleeper players can win you huge tournaments like the Millionaire Maker. He scored 46.9 points and was on fewer than 500 of the 72,609 lineups that users submitted. This means that “DrewTheChamp” got a humongous boost over nearly the entire tournament with his Jonas Gray play. Seeing opportunity where others don’t is one of the keys to winning daily fantasy tournaments and “DrewTheChamp” nailed it here.
Jeremy Hill and A.J. Green make for an odd pairing in a tournament like this but they both performed above expectation and paid off. Typically you don’t want a running back and receiver from the same team because they’re in essence competing with each other for their team’s share of fantasy points, thus limiting the combined upside of the duo.
Brandon Marshall is a stud and had a solid game that you would expect out of him. The majority of million dollar winners on DraftKings so far this season have used a wide receiver in the flex position. Mychal Rivera was a cheap tight end option who didn’t contribute a ton but offered just enough. Finally, the Buccaneers defense was another very contrarian play that pulled out a real nice day thanks to Robert Griffin III’s continued struggles.
FanDuel’s $2.5M Sunday Million
Over at FanDuel, the $2.5M Sunday Million tournament hosted 114,942 players at a $25 buyin. 21,840 of the field cashed and the winning lineup was awarded $300,000.

FanDuel has opted for a much flatter payout structure than DraftKings. Different users have different opinions on how money should be distributed in tournaments. It’s up to you to decide which suits you better. I think both methods are viable and have their pros and cons so I like to play both tournaments weekly.
FanDuel user “yoyomah” was able to cobble together the winning lineup this week. Let’s take a look at what worked for him.
that man again! Aaron Rodgers and his pal Randall Cobb show up here just as they did on DraftKings. And oh look, there’s Jonas Gray at .3 percent owned. It’s no coincidence that these guys were on both winning rosters. They were also key cogs in offenses with some of the highest projected scoring totals of the week.
Le’Veon Bell, Kelvin Benjamin, and Jordan Matthews were popular choices who got the job done. Many users had these players, but not many were able to pair them with the monster game from Jonas Gray. Another cheap tight end who didn’t necessarily blow the doors off appears in Jared Cook. Nick Novak was a very popular kicker option for minimum price on a quality San Diego offense. And putting a bow on it was the Green Bay Packers defense who tortured Mark Sanchez and the Eagles to the tune of three defensive touchdowns.
Each week I examine successful lineups in both of these huge contests. This week, a lot of concepts that I believe are vital to winning large field tournaments held true. Pairing a quarterback with a receiver is tantamount. Finding unheralded players who have a big game can give you a boost over the field and can be a huge difference maker.
Combining these two elements with solid values elsewhere, along with a defense that performs well, is the magic formula to victory in large field tournaments. Try your own lineups this week. Who knows? Maybe it will be you walking away with the million.
