Time is quickly running out in the 2014 Card Player Player of the Year race, sponsored by CarbonPoker. Here is a look at everything that went down over the past seven days as the 2014 race nears the final stretch:
Borgata Fall Poker Open Heads-Up NLH
A 64-player, capped-field, $560 buy-in no-limit hold’em event at the Borgata is far from a competitor for the largest event of the week, even in a relatively slow week on the poker tournament circuit. Said event did end up having an impact on the top 20 of the 2014 Player of the Year race, however, because Joseph McKeehen results finished as a semi-finalist.
McKeehen earned only $3,104 and 42 POY points for his ninth POY-qualified score of the year. The North Wales, PA native now has $1,207,689 in year-to-date earnings, with five titles under his belt in 2014. His largest cash came when he finished runner-up in a $1,500 no-limit hold’em event at the World Series of Poker this summer for $820,863 and 1,100 POY points.
As a result of this most recent score he climbed to 15th place in the overall POY rankings with 3,086 points.
WSOP Circuit Planet Hollywood Main Event
John Eames topped a field of 1,044 entries in the 2014 WSOP Circuit Planet Hollywood $1,675 no-limit hold’em main event to win his first gold ring and the $289,706 first-place prize.
Eames entered the final table as one of the short stacks but managed to make it to heads-up play against Matt Berkey, who ended days 1 and 2 as the overnight chip leader.
Eames was able to come out on top in the end after two hours of one-on-one battling, sending Berkey to the rail in second place with $179,119 in prize money and 800 Card Player Player of the Year points.
Eames scored 960 POY points at his second final table of 2014, moving him into 288th place in the overall POY standings.
Heartland Poker Tour Soaring Eagle Casino
A total of 465 players turned out for the Heartland Poker Tour Soaring Eagle $1,650 no-limit hold’em main event in Mt. Pleasant, MI.
The lion’s share of the $666,600 prize pool ended up going to David Gutfreund, who came out on top of a final table that included the likes of 2009 WSOP main event champion Joe Cada. The Chicago native earned $156,649 and 720 POY points for the win. This was his second final table showing of the year, having placed seventh in a Mid-States Poker Tour event in Iowa earlier this year.
As a result Gutfreund has climbed to 352nd place in the POY rankings with 900 total points and $172,261 in year-to-date earnings.
