In an effort to replicate its enormous success with online poker, PartyGammon (a popular member of PartyGaming's gaming suite) has just completed the inaugural PartyGammon.com Million Tournament at the Atlantis Resort in the Bahamas. For the first time ever, the total prize pool exceeded $1.2 million.
Andreas Maertens, a 33-year-old German, was crowned as the 2007 backgammon champion and pocketed over $600,000 for his efforts. Maertens is a competitive player in both poker and backgammon. He is a regular on the poker tournament circuit, and won the 1996 German Backgammon Open.
Andreas qualified for the world's richest backgammon tournament online, and beat out 36-year-old Danish backgammon ace Lasse Hjorth Madsen in a thrilling finale. Madsen pocketed over $144,000 for his runner-up finish.
