At long last, British poker players and gamblers alike will get their own local taste of Las Vegas in the United Kingdom. Manchester, UK's third-largest city and home of the ultra-popular football (soccer) team Manchester United, will be the site of a new Supercasino.

The Liberal government led by Tony Blair is easing 40-year-old restrictions on casino gaming in the United Kingdom in an effort to spur employment, tourism, and investment in Britain's poorest areas. It is estimated that the supercasino in Manchester will bring in over $520 million in investment, creating 2,700 new jobs.

More importantly, with the 54,000-square-foot casino complex, the U.K. will gain a perfect venue from which it can stage its own U.S.-style mega-poker tournaments.

The Casino Advisory Panel also recommended eight other locations for such casinos: Great Yarmouth, Kingston-upon-Hull, Leeds, Middlesbrough, Milton Keynes, Newham, Solihull, and Southampton.
