Billionaire casino mogul Steve Wynn is prepared to make his planned Boston-area casino look more like his casinos in Las Vegas than he originally had envisioned.
Despite winning the license to build a Las Vegas-style casino in the Boston area, Wynn Resorts was told by Massachusetts gaming regulators that the company’s proposed design for the property was too generic. Last week, Wynn Resorts announced a redesign, according to the Associated Press.
The hotel tower will remain at 24 stories, but the new design features a plan for a wider structure. It will have 600 rooms, up about 100 from the previous plan.
Also, Wynn will ditch plans for a nightclub, and instead have more convention space.
The land the casino will be built on is 33 acres.
“This is a vast improvement over the design before,” said Steve Crosby, the state’s top gaming regulator. “It will be incredibly visible. It’s striking…Something exciting and to be proud of.”
Wynn plans to open the casino in 2017. In order to do, a clean-up of the former Monsanto Chemical site will need to be completed. However, that’s not the biggest hurdle to having the property finally open. According to the AP, the cities of Revere, Somerville and Boston and rival casino operator Mohegan Sun have filed a lawsuit that seeks to have Wynn’s casino license rescinded and the selection process for a license to be redone.
Caesars Entertainment was once interested in a casino in Boston, but the firm left amid discontent with how the state was conducting the licensing process.
