Wagering at Nevada sports books is at record levels, and the casino industry is looking to continue the upswing by getting full-scale sports wagering in New Jersey, as well as betting on the Olympics in Nevada.

In an effort to push forward the campaign for law changes favorable to sports betting expansion, the American Gaming Association, the casino industry’s top lobbying group on Capitol Hill, has announced that a total of $3.8 billion in illicit wagers will be placed on Super Bow XLIX.

That’s 38 times what is bet legally (in Nevada). While sports betting is technically OK in four U.S. states, Nevada is the only one with a real sports betting industry.

State governments aren’t a fan of black market betting because it’s untaxed and unregulated.

Here’s a look at coverage of this topic from a local Las Vegas news station.

Last year, the AGA announced that it was no longer going to be explicitly pushing the online poker issue at the federal level, due to intense division between some top casino companies (Las Vegas Sands vs. mostly everyone else) with regards to web gambling. Sports betting expansion has become one of the AGA’s top areas of focus.
