South Africa To Continue Anti-Web Poker StanceFor Over Four Years Country Has Been Unfavorable To Online Games |

South Africa’s Department of Trade and Industry has no desire to see the legalization of real-money online gaming in the country, dashing previous optimism that online poker would become legal in the near future.
According to iol.co.za, the Department said: “In our view no amount of control will adequately curb the harm that may be caused to South African citizens by online gambling, hence we reiterate that it must remain a banned activity.”
The real reason could be that the government doesn’t think it has the capability to regulate the industry, the report said. Online gaming markets across the world have proven that oversight is not only possible, but that it also works. Many argue that online casinos offer certain advantages for combating underage play and addictive gambling that brick-and-mortar casinos do not.
Experts believe it is impossible to truly ban online gambling in South Africa outright, as citizens will always be able to access sites based in foreign countries.
Online poker was banned in South Africa in 2010. Online gambling operators and players in South Africa could then face fines of up to R10 million, 10 years in jail, or both.
