The South African Department of Trade and Industry is seeking a ban on Internet gambling, according to a report from bdlive.co.za.

The proposal is currently being discussed by high-ranking government officials at the National Gambling Policy Council.

Opponents to online gambling in South Africa reportedly are skeptical of the amount of job creation that would come from it being authorized.

However, some there think that a prohibition isn’t the right way to go.

“That is a very, very bad decision,” [Democratic Alliance] spokesman on trade and industry Geordin Hill-Lewis said. “I fiercely disagree with that view. It is completely shortsighted to say that it is better for South Africans not to be allowed to gamble online when there is patently significant demand in the country to do that. It is for government to facilitate that in the safest way possible.”

In other words: regulate it.

According to the report: “Provinces have the competence to issue licences and rely on gambling as a source of revenue, whereas national government is responsible for formulating the national policy framework.” The online poker issue there has similarities to that in America.
