Via ReutersThough he allowed riverboat casinos in the state to move onto land, Indiana Gov. Mike Pence has vetoed a bill that would have allowed Indiana residents to bet on horse races via the Internet.

According to nwitimes.com, lawmakers in the state are scheduled to meet early next month to decide if they want to override the veto.

The legislation would allow people to deposit money with companies who would then place horse race bets for them after receiving “online instructions,” the report said.

“This legislation is contrary to my longtime position against online gaming,” Pence said. “Advance-deposit wagering, not currently permitted in Indiana, would also violate my position on expanding gaming here in Indiana.”

The decision to permit land-based casinos isn’t seen as gaming expansion.

The commercial riverboat casinos are allowed to move onto land as long as they currently lease or own it. It is expected that some of the riverboat casinos would spend on projects to expand their offerings thanks to being permitted to move onto land.

Indiana is trying to keep pace with gaming expansion in neighboring Ohio and Illinois.

Indiana’s casino industry is worth around $2.5 billion annually.
