English Bridge Union Wants State Funding

In September, a judge in London will determine whether or not the card game bridge is a sport, according to reporting from the BBC.

The English Bridge Union wants the country’s sports council, named Sport England, to recognize the game as a sport. Doing so would allow the EBU to receive state funding.

A spokesman for the EBU said: “The EBU sought the judicial review after Sport England refused to recognized bridge as a sport, a position which the EBU believes to be inconsistent with both the wishes of Parliament, and the opinion of significant international sporting organisations. When ruling on what constituted a sport in the 2011 Charities Act, Parliament specifically included mind sports, stating that sport comprised activities which promote health involving physical or mental skill or exertion.”

Like poker, bridge is an immensely complex game played by millions around the world. Earlier this year, professional poker player Gus Hansen reportedly invested in technology that could enhance our understanding of competitive bridge. Hansen also competes in bridge tournaments.

While bridge might get classified as a sport in the U.K., the game of poker unfortunately is still viewed by some jurisdictions in America as not even a game of skill. That’s slowly changing, as more states are looking at regulating online poker sites.
