Going into the $5,000 six-handed no-limit hold’em event, Jason Mercier was looking for a summer saving score. Poker had not treated Mercier well the first few weeks of the summer series, having only recorded one small cash while racking up heavy losses in the cash games. To make matter worse, Mercier was forced to pay out a hefty sum to Brian Hastings as part of a bracelet bet last week when Hastings won the $10,000 stud event.
Mercier had dug himself into a huge hole, but fortunately for him, he came out on top of the 550-player field and picked up not only the lion’s share of the $2,585,000 prize pool, but also his third World Series of Poker bracelet.
“It feels great,” Mercier admitted. “I was really down on myself. I was getting beat up in cash, busting every tournament. This is the first tournament I made day 2 of. It feels really good just to go deep, make the final table, and to win is just the cherry on top.”
Mercier banked $633,357 for the victory, and now has $14.3 million in career live tournament earnings. He also earned 1,680 Card Player Player of the Year points and when combined with his three other final table appearances this year, he now has a total of 2,270 points, putting him in 10th place overall. Mercier still sits in 12th place on the all-time tournament earnings rankings.
This was the 28-year-old Floridian’s first hold’em bracelet. His previous two bracelets came in pot-limit Omaha.
In order to secure the win, Mercier topped a stacked final table that included fellow bracelet winners Mike Gorodinsky (3rd) and Igor Dubinskyy (5th), as well as top international pros Simon Deadman (2nd), Dario Sammartino (4th) and James Obst (6th). Other notables who made deep runs included Nacho Barbero (7th), Jorryt Van Hoof (9th), Tuan Le (12th) and Jennifer Tilly (14th).
