A total of 1,244 players turned out for the 2015 World Series of Poker $2,500 no-limit hold’em event, building a total prize pool of $2,830,100. In the end Matt O’Donnell emerged victorious, capturing his first gold bracelet and $551,941. The 27-year-old poker pro currently based in Tampa, Florida has had close calls at the WSOP before, including a runner-up finish last year, and was relieved to finally seal the deal this time around.
“When I had the chip lead last year, I was outside and was hearing – ‘the bracelet is yours, you’re going to win it,” said O’Donnell after the win. “I’d been here before but that way of thinking wasn’t going to happen this time. I didn’t get excited until after I won. Thankfully, I closed it out this time."
Timur Margolin came into the final day as the chip leader of the five remaining players after play was halted late last night. O’Donnell came into day 4 in second chip position, with Ireland’s Andy Black sitting in the middle of the pack.
It took only 33 hands to get from five players down to heads-up play between Margolin and O’Donnell. The final two would then play one-on-one for roughly five more hours, with plenty of momentum shifts and a few lead changes. In the end O’Donnell had built up a solid lead my the time the final hand arose.
With blinds at 150,000 – 300,000 Margolin raised to 600,000 from the button and O’Donnell moved all-in. Margolin made the call with the 66 and found out he was in a classic race situation against O’Donnell’s QJ.
The board ran out AAQQ2, giving O’Donnell a full house and the pot. With that Margolin was sent to the rail as the runner up earning $341,338.
