Friday Matchups

I’ve been spending some time playing the new MLB product at FantasyDraft over the last week. With that in mind, I thought I’d delve into the salaries there for this Friday’s slate and highlight some top value plays and studs to pair them with. My goal is to highlight a player from three different price points at each position, with a couple bonus hitters to round out your roster.

Pitchers

Clayton Kershaw ($24,400) – If you’re constructing a lineup geared toward head to head or 50/50 type games, start with Kershaw and figure out the rest. He’s expensive, you say? So what. Trust me on this one; when Kershaw is 85 percent owned, you don’t want to be on the other side of what’s to come.

Michael Wacha ($19,200) – Squaring off against a heavily right-handed and strikeout prone Padres club should suit Wacha nicely here. It is fair to say that after Kershaw, Wacha is the safest pitcher remaining on this slate. However, my real second favorite, with price factored in is…

Jesse Chavez ($13,800) – Chavez doesn’t appear to be having a very easy time on the mound as of late. However, the rough outings he’s had recently have been in some situations that were much tougher than squaring off at home against the Mariners. With the weak opposing offense, pitchers park, and skill level that Chavez has flashed, he makes for a very good secondary option here.

Infielders

Manny Machado ($9,200) – Matchups really don’t get a whole lot better than this one. Squaring off against John Danks in this hitters park is a great situation for all of the Orioles right handed bats.

Pablo Sandoval ($8,100) – Sandoval started the season hot and then became mired in a really prolonged slump. Well, I think he’s starting to heat back up and on Friday he will draw a matchup with Dan Straily, who appears to really struggle with left-handed hitters.

Scooter Gennett ($7,200) – He may not be a household name, but amongst DFS players, Scooter has earned one name status. In a matchup with one of the days worst pitchers, look for Scooter to continue his little hot streak for at least one more day.

Outfielders

Adam Jones ($8,700) – Continuing my Orioles theme for the evening, Jones is my favorite top dollar hitter of the night. Once again, Danks should really struggle to contain someone of Jones’ caliber inside U.S. Cellular Field.

David Peralta ($8,300) – In Kyle Kendrick, Peralta squares off with one of the worst pitchers on the slate in one of the best parks for hitters in all of baseball. This one is pretty straightforward for me. I’m looking for a big game out of Peralta on Friday.

Gerardo Parra ($7,200) – One of my current favorite players to use in DFS now draws a premium matchup against a young pitcher who is struggling mightily with left-handed bats. Parra is just the right blend of quality hitting, power, speed, and leading off for a decent lineup. It is very possible that he ends up on some of my teams on Friday.

Utility Hitters

Ryan Braun ($10,000) – I vividly remember a game earlier this season that pitted the Brewers against Michael Lorenzen in Cincinnati. On that day, it was a very close decision between Braun and another outfielder for me. Well, I chose the other guy and Braun hit two home runs, including an eighth inning grand slam. No promises can be made, but Braun definitely makes for a high upside play on Friday.

David Ortiz ($8,600) – Big Papi has been his same old self thus far in 2015. He’s crushing right-handed pitching and has a matchup with Dan Straily, who is making his first start of the year after a stint in the minors. With Straily’s struggles against the lefties, Ortiz makes for a very nice play here.

Jake Lamb ($7,700) – My reasoning for liking David Peralta rings true again with Lamb. Here we have a talented left-handed bat facing a pitcher who has been nothing short of atrocious in 2015. Add in a great park and low ownership and you’ve got yourself a fantastic tournament option in Lamb.
