The penultimate tournament of the 2015 World Series of Poker, the $777 buy-in Lucky Sevens event, featured a massive field of 4,422 players, creating a total prize pool of $3,095,400.
This was the first ever Lucky Sevens event. The final 468 players finished in the money, earning a minimum of $1,361. After four days of play, it was 25-year-old Connor Berkowitz who was the last man standing, earning his first bracelet and the $487,784 first-place prize.
Amazingly, this was Berkowitz’s first cash at the WSOP and only his second tournament played. The New Jersey native had a previous career high cash of just $5,311.
“This is like a dream for me,” said Berkowitz. “I’m speechless. I literally don’t know what to say other than this is a dream come true. It’s every poker player’s dream. To all my friends and family who [were] watching, that was huge for me. Knowing they were rooting for me really made me want to win even more.”
To get the title, Berkowitz had to overcome a final table that featured three-time WSOP bracelet winner and Card Player columnist Matt Matros (8th), as well as top high-stakes poker pro Faraz Jaka (5th).
Other notables who made deep runs in the event included Adam Geyer (18th), James Mackey (21st), Kevin MacPhee (35th), Joe Kuether (41st) and Brett Shaffer (44th).
