Friday Matchups

I can’t stress enough how enjoyable the user experience is when it comes to creating MLB lineups on FantasyDraft. The ability to simply use the hitters you would like to use without having to struggle to figure out which crappy middle infielders you’re going to use is so much fun. In addition, using two starting pitchers adds a really interesting strategic twist in my opinion. Having said all that, here are some of my favorites at different price points at each position for Friday.

Pitcher

Madison Bumgarner ($21,900), Giants vs. Phillies – Right now, the Phillies are a pretty hopeless offense. Madison Bumgarner? He’s far from hopeless. Throw in the Phillies experiencing an extremely negative park shift from Citizens Bank in Philadelphia to the cavernous AT&T Park in San Francisco and you have a very clear picture of who the top pitcher is for Friday.

Collin McHugh ($16,800), Astros @ Rays – Without question, McHugh can be a little bit volatile, and that’s not what we’re typically looking for in a pitcher for DFS. However, this is a pretty good spot for him as he gets a positive park shift for pitchers and squares off against a Rays club that seemingly is in danger of being no hit a couple times a week these days.

Mike Bolsinger ($13,200), Dodgers vs. Brewers – If you’re really trying to free up some cap space – a viable strategy anytime there is a game being played in Coors Field – then Bolsinger is a very reasonable option on Friday. He’s been rock solid in his short career thus far despite being a late bloomer in just his second season at the age of 27. He also draws a righty heavy Brewers club with their best player, Ryan Braun, expected to play but at somewhere south of 100% healthy due to a wrist ailment.

Disclaimer: The Rockies have yet to announce a pitcher for Friday evening as of this writing. It should go without saying that some of the visiting Atlanta Braves will have quite a bit of value no matter who is named the starter, but I won’t be writing any of them up here.

Infield

Prince Fielder ($9,200), Rangers vs. Padres – The sportsbooks have deemed the Rangers to be favorites in the second largest projected total of the night on Friday. Naturally, looking at some Texas bats seems like a good idea. And there’s nowhere better to begin that search than with the behemoth first baseman Fielder.

Victor Martinez ($8,100), Tigers @ Twins – Aside from a magical 2014 season, Ervin Santana appears to be run of the mill. With VMart hitting like the VMart we remember from last year after returning from some time off to get his knee right, you can safely deploy him on Friday.

Danny Valencia ($6,000), Blue Jays @ Royals – I’d be lying if I said there was a ton of conviction with this pick. However, Valencia is very cheap and does typically mash against left-handed pitching. In Danny Duffy, he draws a fairly average lefty who is backed by one of the game’s strongest bullpens. I won’t be dying to use Valencia tomorrow, but he’s definitely someone to consider if you’re in a jam.

Outfield

Charlie Blackmon ($9,000), Rockies vs. Braves – Shelby Miller has been lights out this year. However, Coors Field has a way of making decent pitchers look bad, so I’ll take my chances with the Rockies leadoff man having a nice game here.

Josh Hamilton ($7,200), Rangers vs. Padres – Going back to the Rangers well here, Hamilton is priced very affordably and has huge potential for the price. Hamilton has had his struggles off the field and his story is well documented, but when he gets a chance to play in a good situation like this one, look out.

Eddie Rosario ($5,600), Twins vs. Tigers – When choosing hitters in MLB DFS, there are a few things I like to look for. Namely, I’m looking for power and/or speed against a pitcher who isn’t very tough. While Rosario, is a bit of a no name, he has all three of those check boxes going for him, even if it’s just a tiny check in each box. He’s definitely someone to look out for if he hits in the top five of the Twins order.
