On Sep. 25, a new drama about gambling, including poker, will hit theaters nationwide. The film, “Mississippi Grind,” stars Ryan Reynolds, who plays a poker player.
Reynolds is nomadic and decides to team up with an older gambler played by Ben Mendelsohn to travel around the U.S. South in search of action. Mendelsohn’s character apparently is not very good at gambling but is hoping to turn things around and thinks Reynolds’ character can help.
It sounds sort of like Worm and Mike McDermott, especially when you consider that Mendelsohn’s character is trying to make good on gambling debts to “everyone.”
Interestingly, Reynolds’ character says in the trailer that he “doesn’t care about winning.”
The film is 108 minutes and is R-rated. It comes from director-writers Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck. Its IMDB rating at the moment is 8.1, higher than the 7.4 for “Rounders,” but it’s obviously still early very in the process of the masses evaluating the film.
Mississippi Grind appeared at the Sundance Film Festival in January. It has been called a “beautifully textured road movie” by variety.com.
