This article is a recap of Ian Johns experience at FanDuel’s Boston Fantasy Baseball Championship. You can read about how he won his seat into the event here.

Boston Fantasy Baseball Championship

While it’s not something you tend to actively think about when you’re creating lineups, Daily Fantasy Sports – especially in tournament form – can be very much like poker in that you are trying to predict what your opponents will do in order to assist you in making the best possible decisions. In the week or so leading up to this FanDuel sponsored event, I started to give some thought to what my opponents may do in regards to their lineups for this championship.

Scanning the 12-player field, I noticed that a few of my competitors were some of the best, if not the very best, MLB DFS tournament players in the game. This led me to believe that their lineups would generally skew toward being ‘tournament’ lineups, which in essence means I was assuming they would be taking chances on some slightly lower value (in my eyes) plays in order to differentiate their lineups from the field. Seeing as though my typical approach is centered on head-to-head and double up strategy, I came to the conclusion that I could attack this tournament with a similar strategy and that my roster would have a built-in contrarianism based on how my opponents were likely to act.

This thinking served me well in that my lineup did have the contrarian angle I was looking for, even though in the end it resulted in a ninth-place finish in the 12-player field. Sometimes you win sometimes you lose.

On the bright side, I had a fantastic experience that I wouldn’t trade for anything. This was my first time being in Boston and the city didn’t disappoint. FanDuel put us up in an amazing hotel and got us a suite at Friday night’s Red Sox – Tigers game. I had a chance to meet and pick the brains of those top-flight tournament players and that part was especially fascinating to me as they had a ton of interesting insights for me to ponder. All in all, this experience has motivated me to try to qualify for some more of these live final events, as I really enjoyed myself and was impressed with everything it had to offer.

The up and comer in the DFS space is FantasyDraft.com. In addition to their innovative and potentially very profitable for the customer Six Degrees of Pay program, they’ve got nightly guaranteed contests up and running for MLB and are gearing up for a big splash come NFL season. I’ve already talked about how I love their lineup construction ideas, which offer more freedom to use the players you want to use than any other site out there. Other things I really dig about the site are their limits on multi-entry that gives beginning players a better chance to compete and their recent software overhaul has the site running smoothly and is very user friendly. For a beginning player, this is a great site to try out.
