In case you are wondering, you did read the headline correctly. This tournament series is free to enter. It’s easy to argue the merits of a lot of promotions that get introduced and recycled in the online poker world; it’s tough to argue the value this tournament series provides to players.
In case you’re unfamiliar with what a Freebuy is, here’s the lowdown. A Freebuy is a hybrid tournament that combines a freeroll and a rebuy/add-on structure. All players with an Americas Cardroom account can enter the tournament for free, and then have the option of adding more chips with real money via rebuys and add-ons or battle it out with the free starting stack.
We ran our first Freebuy Super Series this year at the end of August and it was a big success. The series drew record participation and brought a lot of new faces to try out our poker service for free with the added benefit of being able to take home some real money.
I’ll be the first to admit that the series didn’t go off without a hitch. Unfortunately the sheer volume of players that showed up for the $20,000 GTD Main Event caused some technical issues and we were forced to cancel that one tournament. We’ve made the necessary adjustments so we can handle this volume and are looking forward to getting this right for you guys this time around.
It’s not the first time over this past year we’ve had to overcome some adversity. In December of last year we were forced to cancel our first Million Dollar Sunday $1,000,000 GTD tourney due to DOSS attacks from an unknown source. Our team worked around the clock and since then we’ve now successfully hosted 3 Million Dollar Sunday tourneys without a hitch and just announced 5 more for this fall on September 13th, and every Sunday in October. The Freebuy Super Series II is modelled exactly after our first schedule. All tournaments are free-to-enter and rebuy and add-ons range from $0.01 to $20 depending on the tournament. The tournament spans 10 days, all leading up to the $20,000 GTD Main Event.
Registration opens for each Freebuy tournament 2 hours before the events begin, and ends 2 hours after registration closes. The add-on option is available 3 hours into each event. Those who elect to rebuy and add-on for each tournament have the added advantage of a healthier stack. Players start with a starting stack of 1,000 chips, rebuys will get you 2,500 chips and each add-on is worth 10,000 chips.
